By Assistant Chief Zach Velivis
December 21, 2019

As 2019 draws to a close we wanted to recognize the members of our department for the time all of them have devoted to training. Our members participated in 48 company drills which averaged 38 members per drill and some with over 50 members in attendance. We had 95 different members participate in training during the year.

Training has always been and continues to be one of the top priorities of the Fort Washington Fire Company. Our dedication to training can be traced back many years to the vision of past chief and life member George Haggar. Uncle George, as he was affectionately called, spearheaded the design and construction of our training grounds, which were built by our members. Fort Washington is one of the only departments in the region to have its own training center, complete with a live fire training building. Our members have always and continue to operate on the fire ground with the skills, knowledge and professionalism that have been taught and reinforced through our training programs.

In addition to our in-house training we try to bring in instructors from outside our area to provide a different point of view and new tactics. In 2019 we had former Chief Ricky Riley, Captain Bobby Eckert and Mike Dragonetti at 88A to present classes on tower ladder operations, fire ground considerations and elevator rescue safety operations. We invited our mutual aid departments to join us at these classes and we had close to 100 people at each training.
